Physical Massage
Known in Thailand as Physical Massage or Nuat phaen boran, which correctly translates only as ancient massage or traditional massage, this form of massage is also known as Thai ancient massage, traditional Thai massage, Thai classical massage or Thai bodywork. It is usually soothing because of its emphasis on stretching and loosening the body. Its roots go back far into history, originating in India based on the Ayurveda, and then becoming popular in Thailand.

The massage recipient changes into pajamas and lies on a mat or firm mattress on the floor. (It can be done solo or in a group of a dozen or so patients in the same large room). The massage giver leans on the recipient's body using hands and forearms to apply firm rhythmic pressure to almost every part of the taker's body.

Usually no oil is applied. A full course of Thai massage typically lasts two hours or more.

Note: The traditional therapeutic practice of Thai massage should not be confused with the sexual service of the same name that is available in some hotels and brothels.
Reflexology Massage
This type of massage is now very popular in Thailand. You will find a lot of businesses touting Reflexology Massage.

Reflexology is based on the belief that there are places on the feet (and hands) that correspond to parts of the body, e.g. internal organs and joints. Manipulating those parts of the feet (or hands) can have direct effects on corresponding parts of the body.

Some proponents claim the ability to diagnose and treat illnesses of these organs by appropriate reflexological treatment.

Some doctors agree that human health problems can be linked to nervous stress. Therefore, the solution to this is Foot Massage, which naturally improves nerve and blood system.
SPA & Massage
The word SPA comes from the Latin phrase, 'sanus per aquam', or 'health through water.'

Modern SPAs have their roots in ancient towns famed for the healing powers of their mineral waters and hot springs. Travelers would come to 'take the waters' and restore their health.

Oils, creams, lotions or fragrant substances are applied on the skin to reduce friction and allow smooth strokes.

Some practitioners claim benefits from vegetable rather than mineral oil while others disagree.

Aromatherapy, also used in SPAs, is the use of fragrant substances for health and beauty treatment. It is often combined with massage since oils can be used to carry fragrances while also allowing more pressure to be applied to muscles.

Its proponents claim that health benefits are associated with specific choices of scent.
Body Massage
Body massage (ARB OB NUAT or OB ARB NUAT, the Thai words for washing and massage) in Thailand most often consists of either an oil massage, assisted bath, and/or bodyslide treatment ('soapie') followed by sexual services.

These latter may or may not be included in the price paid to the house. If not, they are negotiated with the masseuse.

OB ARB NUAT establishments tend to cater mostly to locals and Asians, but some will also accept Western customers.

Thailand's Massage Parlours offer you a lot more than just relaxation of your muscles.

In most of these places, the women wait sitting behind a glass window ('fish bowl'), usually watching TV, while the men have a drink and choose a woman. Each lady in the fish bowl wears a number, making it easier for you to select the one you fancy.

Normally the whole experience lasts about an hour and a half, costing between 1000 and 2000 baht.
