Therefore, widows and divorcees are not considered ideal wives for Thai men and Thai women often remain single after divorce. This is different in western culture, where a woman's prior marital or sexual history is not considered so important. Therefore the western men have opened up new possibilities for divorced Thai women. Their western husbands make them feel that they can be respectable, whereas before, after divorcing their Thai husbands they had a feeling of being 'used'. Many of the transmigrated women agree that they had never realised that they have the rights over their bodies and could make decisions in their marriages before they met their western husbands. Some village women explained that the realisation was 'like a miracle'. The women frankly confess that financial security was a major factor in their decision to marry, but many gave other reasons for preferring western men. In a newspaper interview, one woman married to a farang complained of the 'bad habits' of Thai men. Some women interviewed agreed, citing some of those bad habits as addiction to gambling and alcoholic drinking and having no responsibility for their families. Some said they and their children used to experience domestic violence from their husbands.

Loy Krathong night is a good night for sex. A poll conducted among 1,330 high-school and vocational students in Bangkok says 7.5% of respondents plan to have sex on Loy Krathong night, while 10.4% said they planned to stay in with their lovers. It also showed that 31.3% of young men and 9.9% of young women already had sex. The average age of Thai teens having sex for the first time was 16 years, with most viewing sex as a 'common and natural' thing. Only one-fifth had used condoms. The poll said that in three months, 20% of respondents had had sex 6-10 times, 24.5% 3-5 times, and about 40% no more than two times. A Chulalongkorn University education lecturer said free sex has become the most critical problem among Thai teens. Free sex had come from western culture, but Thai teens had adopted only part of the message. In the west, sex usually came with responsibility that lead to people setting up families, but what happened in Thai society was different. Western people generally stop their sexual relationships when they have found the right person, but Thai youngsters think free sex means they can sleep with whoever they want.

Kasem Wattanachai, a privy councillor, has said Thailand has become a degenerate society where citizens lack morals and look only for ways to become wealthy and escape blame and punishment. He said Thailand is changing rapidly from a society that believes in Buddhist precepts, honesty, thrift and morality to one of selfishness admiring wealth and lacking any conscience. People, he said, constantly try to look for legal loopholes to gain the upper hand over others and evade blame and punishment. Kasem Wattanachai said Thai society is plagued with vices including addiction to liquor and cigarettes, sex and gambling. Thailands police are ranked the biggest violator of citizens' rights and liberties.
